SBS 2003 server and Outlook 2003 client installation
Windows XP Pro workstation totally patched for windows and office. Added
workststation to new sbs 2003 SP1 domain. For whatever reason the server tried to install Outlook 2003 even though it was there already. Hung up during installation. Outlook will now not run. Have uninstalled Office 2003 completely tried again no luck. Uninstalled outook and tried to install from server No luck. Removed and added workstation to domain a 2nd time no luck. Deleted user profile and created new user profile and reinstalled Outlook. I can get outlook instgalled but it will only open once and then if you close it and try to open a 2nd time it does not open. You have to go and stop the service and hope it will work again. Or you reboot and it then I can get in. Any thoughts |

Best guess is to do the following.
1) Uninstall Office 2003 from the Windows XP workstation (this includes things that share office components like FrontPage 2003, Visio 2003, Word/Visio 2003 readers, .etc) 2) Make sure the MSOCache folder (it is a hidden folder at the root of C: ?) is gone 3) Reboot 4) Install Office 2003 and then patch it back to where it was 5) Make sure that you disable the group policy that installs Outlook 2003. (Yes, what comes with SBS is seen as a different product. If that comes down, it will try to do a mix n' match on that XP workstation and make patching and interesting thing to figure out when doesn't work.) Outside of that, you might have to create a new mail profile and delete the old, but things should be fine at this point. Great info I am going to try it.
Which Outlook should I install? The Outlook from the SBS Server or the Outlook from the CD? I can do a custom install withthe Cd and use the outlook from the SBS server? Which combo works best? Outlook from Office 2003 CD. The only time I would use the Outlook from the
SBS CDs is if I had workstations that didn't come with Office 2003. "Outlook 2003 and SBS Client Installation" icrosoft.com wrote in message ... Great info I am going to try it. Thats What I did. I have been on the phone with M$ today and still doesn't
work. It brings up a Outlook 2003 splash screen that is different from all the other workstation and it keeps saying to go into safemode. The splash screen for outlook looks like a light yellow not the same as a the spash screen for normal Outlook 2003 It seems to be a couple of versions installed and I can't get it flushed out even with uninstalls. SBS 2003 server and Outlook 2003 client installation
The only time I have seen Outlook 2003 splash screen change to the lighter
colour is when it is installed a Windows Server that is a Terminal Services server. About the only thing that I can think of adding to the 5 steps below is to use the Windows Install Cleanup utility between steps 2 and 3 to make sure that the system thinks all Office products are uninstalled. Thats what it looks like to me too. According to the MS Engineers that got
on remotely and looked at it . They recommed the fastest fix was to reload the workstation so I will do that this weekend. The temp workaround is to use a pop account and leave the mail on the server. I think the light splash screen is actually a safemode screen for Office. I saw the same light splash screen for outlook which then outlook proceeded to go into safemode. But the screen sure does remond me of the Outlook TS version but who knows...
