What is between your Outlook and the Exchange server? There may be valid
security reasons for not allowing such access from where you are (such as at
home) without proper measures, like a VPN.

What does your exchange administrator say?

I was going to joke that mail.xyzcorp.net was not a valid address, but I'll
darned...
it resolves to 216.156.2.60 (mail.njd.xo.com)

The internet, with no VPN. Is that the only way to authenticate, by logging
on the network.

With an Exchange server, you must authenticate to the domain to access
email. That would be 'logging on to the network' in this case.

It would not be smart to allow such authentication and communication
unsecured over the internet.

There are a few common options:
- use Outlook Web Access
- use a VPN
- use RPC over HTTPS (for Outlook 2003 accessing Exchange 2003)
