I occasionally receive attachments from friends that when attempting to open
say " unknown file type " create an association in folders to open. I
can't figure out how to do this. I looked thru the entire help feature but
couldn't find anything. Anyone know?

I think I may have needed to include this ... I use Outlook Express 6.

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.

Save the attachment to your desktop (or another folder of your choice)
first, virus scan it and then try to open it. If Windows still doesn't
recognise the file type it will ask you what program you wish to open it
with. If you don't know what program it should open with, ask the sender.
As a general rule you should NEVER open an attachment unless you know what
it is, and only then if you trust the person it came from, and only then if
you're sure they intended to send it.

Great advice. After doing this it said you can use the web to look up the
program associated with this file. It was Power Point. I don't have this
program. Is it possible to associate the file with another program like
Microsoft Word?

You can associate it with anything you want, but only Project (or OpenProj,
an open source - and therefore free - Microsoft Project replacement) will be
able to understand it and display it properly. Get OpenProj from

Hi Rojo

My problem is similar. When emailing photos I would click on attachment, go
to my photos, click on the subject photo and attach it to the email and it
worked fine. When I carry out the same procedure now it attaches the photo as
an 'Unknown File Type. I cannot advise my friend what to open it with as I do
not know. In addition I receive from time to time photo attachments from
friends which also appear as UFT, they have the same problem and cannot tell
me what to open it with. Any suggestions? Thanks
