my account doesn't show up on folder list
I am brand new to Outlook 2002. The first thing I did was set up an account,
which seems to work just fine because when I click on "Test Account Settings" everything checks out perfectly. The problem is, my account doesn't show up on the folder list. Where is it? -- Greg in L.A. |

The problem is, my account doesn't show up on the folder list. Where is it? You see message stores in Outlook. Each root node (leftmost node) is a message store. If you are not using Exchange, each message store is contained within a .pst file. Why do I mention this? Because Outlook will aggregate all POP3 accounts into the same message store. If you have 5 POP3 accounts, they all get aggregated into the one message store so, for example, all e-mails received from those 5 POP3 accounts will show up in the one Inbox for the current message store designated to receive e-mails. Each HTTP account, like Hotmail, gets its own separate message store and why you see another root node and subtree for each HTTP account. I'm not familiar with using IMAP accounts but suspect each gets its own message store, too. You did not mention WHAT type of e-mail accounts that you have. If they are POP3 accounts, they all get rolled into one message store. You will need to create separate folders and create rules that check through which account an e-mail was received and have it moved to a folder created to hold e-mails for that account (i.e., use rules to slice apart the Inbox into other folders used to hold e-mails for each account). |

Accounts do not show up in the folder list. You can have only one Inbox and
it collects all the mail from all the accts--if you have more than one. Your account will be in the Accounts list. Click on Tools, Accounts and it will be there. If it is the default account, it will be used to send mail. Note that if you don't receive a test email after setting up your acct and testing the settings, it's not set up correctly. Thank you both for enlightening me on how Outlook handles messages. Things
are pretty clear now, exept for the fact that, when I set up my account (it's a POP3), I pressed the "Test Account Settings" button and everything worked successfully. If that's true, what could be wrong in the account setup? -- Greg in L.A. "VanguardLH" wrote: "gnorberg" wrote in message ... I am brand new to Outlook 2002. Actually, I didn't set up any profile at all. I simply created an email
account and stayed with all other default settings. One thing I just noticed is that I can send emails using this accout, but can't receive them. When sending from Outlook Express to this account on Outlook, the postmaster says the server rejected it. -- Greg in L.A. "Brian Tillman" wrote: tspam wrote: I am brand new to Outlook 2002. You can only create an email account using the details supplied by your ISP.
When you did this & tested the account It all went through OK? Did you then see the test mail in the Outlook Inbox? If this same account exists in Express & you open Express your mail will be received there. Within OL you can send a msg to yourself ie the send / receive address is the same " wrote in message ... Yes, when I tested the account all steps recorded as successful, but no, the
test mail (several of them) never showed up in the OL inbox. Since I can send emails without a problem, I did what you suggested and sent an email to myself but interestingly enough, my email address does not automatically appear in the "From" box like it does in Outlook Express. Is that normal? Most importantly, the message never arrived and I never got a "delivery failure" notification. -- Greg in L.A. Things are pretty clear now, exept for the fact that, when I set up my account (it's a POP3), I pressed the "Test Account Settings" button and everything worked successfully. If that's true, what could be wrong in the account setup? With multiple POP3 accounts getting rolled into a single message store, just what did you expect the one message store to be named? Which of the multiple accounts would be the name of the message store? If you have 5 bags of sugar that you dump into the same storage canister, do you put a label for each different brand of sugar on the canister or do you just label it "Sugar"? You can right-click on the root node for a message store's tree in Outlook and rename it. So if it rolls together N e-mail accounts, what one name are you going to give it? Or is there something ELSE that is "wrong" with your multiple-account setup in Outlook that you have not yet identified and want help with? So far, I seen nothing described in behavior that is "wrong". You expected the "Test Account Settings" to fail instead of succeed? |
