Advanced Find, Instant Search and Indexing
 

1) I just transferred my PST file to a new computer, but there are
still 65000 items left to index, so the instant search says it won't
work. And it doesn't. I left my PC on all night -- what do I need to
do in order to expedite the indexing? It's worth mentioning my PC
does log off me as a user after so much idle time. Does the user need
to be logged in for indexing to take place? If so, how do I extend
the time it takes before Windows XP logs me out?
2) The Advanced Find doesn't work either. It doesn't find messages
that I can see are in there, for example it doesn't return any hits
when I search for messages to SMITH, yet I can see there are messages
to Smith. Does Advanced Find require the indexing to be complete,
too? If not, any ideas why Advanced Find isn't working either?
3) Is this PST file was indexed on the old PC, why isn't it still
indexed on the new PC?

1. Yes, AFAIK you need to be logged in. Are you on a network or is this a
home system?

2. Yes, it uses the index. :(

3. the index is stored in a file, not in the pst. I don't think you can move
the index though.

I'm on a home system. Thanks Diane. I have a home network though -
why do you ask? I'm surprised how slow it is to index. At this rate
it'll take a month! (I do have almost 3G in my pst file though.)

Advanced Find, Instant Search and Indexing
 

If it's a corp network the admin can force a log you, but on a home system
you can configure it so it doesn't sleep.

It shouldn't take much more than an overnight to index it. I'd try deleting
the index and having it do it again... after making sure all the updates are
installed.

Did you make the pst in outlook 2003 or 2007? If 2003, it might be
worthwhile exporting it to a new pst but with 3 GB, that could take as long
as the index. :) (and I'm not sure it will make a diff)

I transferred it from Outlook 2007. Howevver, originally it was
probably created in 2003. I'm down to 59000 items to index.
yesterady it was 60000+. This will take awhile! I'm afraid to
reindex to lose the little bit of progress I've made over 3 days...
but I will take your advice. Thanks

Advanced Find, Instant Search and Indexing
 

Just a thought about the Advanced Find - before starting the search, click
Browse to see what folders Outlook will search (it will search the currently
in-use folder by default) but 2007 does not seem to check sub-folders unless
you specifically check the tick box bottom left in the Browse option.
