Fax Consol is the inbuilt WinXp fax
I'm somewhat surprised that your modem didnt come with its own communication
software, all modems I have had, or installed had modem specific
comms.software, and usually when a modem is provided with a PC that comms
software is also installed.

Youve tried an outlook Detect/Repair?
I believe all the dll's shown in your diagnostics are MS std drivers.

There are any number of free or trial comms software to trial, you could I
guess install one and see if you can dial out, as a test

I dont believe your problem is neccessarily OL related, but possibly related
to the win dialer. I should have asked have you checked Event Viewer for any
err's when you tried to dial out? Maybe also tried the System File checker
( see help)

since nothing has changed - I can still fax but can't still autodial from
Outlook Contacts.

None of this makes any sense to me but neither does anything appear
untoward.

In START/Printers and Faxes It has various printers listed and Fax. When I
click on this I get the fax console.

I've run a repair on Office (which turned out to be Office XP Professional
not just 2003 whatever difference that might make) but that made no
difference either.

I've run out of straws to grasp. If you can think of any let me know
otherwise I think it might save more time in the end if I just put up with
dialing by hand.

If its an OEM PC that came with the modem installed there would usually
be
some modem communications software installed, under Programs or
Accessories.
You can fax & dial within that software

I don’t seem to be able to find any other modem software. The modem
certainly came with the machine – I’ve not fitted it.

When I say I ran a repair on Outlook I ran the repair option in Control
Panel/Add or Remove programs for Microsoft Office, which I thought included
Outlook. I don’t know how to do it for Outlook alone.

I turned on event viewer, tried to make an automatic call, got the error
message but saw no change in the listing even when I left event viewer and
ran it again.

I don’t understand what you mean by the system file checker but taking your
advice I looked it up in help and in Run first typed System.ini then Win.ini

Maybe this makes some sense to you but it might as well be Greek to me. I
might guess that the win.ini file may save settings for programmes but the
system.ini file just seems to be lots of numbers.

I dont think the problem is related to OL.
When you fax are you using windows fax or your modem fax
driver/software?
I would suspect that you probably have some modem software installed,
that
being the case have you tried dialing with that, as a test?

Maybe this makes some sense to you but it might as well be Greek to me. I
might guess that the win.ini file may save settings for programmes but the
system.ini file just seems to be lots of numbers.

I believe all the dll's shown in your diagnostics are MS std drivers.

There are any number of free or trial comms software to trial, you could

guess install one and see if you can dial out, as a test

I dont believe your problem is neccessarily OL related, but possibly
related
to the win dialer. I should have asked have you checked Event Viewer for
any
err's when you tried to dial out? Maybe also tried the System File
checker

since nothing has changed - I can still fax but can't still autodial

None of this makes any sense to me but neither does anything appear
untoward.

In START/Printers and Faxes It has various printers listed and Fax.
When I
click on this I get the fax console.

I've run a repair on Office (which turned out to be Office XP
Professional
not just 2003 whatever difference that might make) but that made no
difference either.

I've run out of straws to grasp. If you can think of any let me know
otherwise I think it might save more time in the end if I just put up
with
dialing by hand.

If its an OEM PC that came with the modem installed there would
usually
be
some modem communications software installed, under Programs or
Accessories.
You can fax & dial within that software
The Shrfax is the MS Shared fax driver & it would appear as a
'printer'
option in eg Word
Fax Consul is the inbuilt winxp fax device
Usually if the Modem drivers are installed from their manufacturers cd
there
would be a modem specific fax driver shown in the 'printers'

I think you should reinstall your modem drivers the manufacturers
site,
which will likely be your PC maker if an HP.
I couldnt find a direct link for the Agere modem manfacturers, only to
generic driver sites.
The latest driver I found would appear to be dated 2004
