(new information here)
My Data File Management (Outlook 2003) is empty; but all my outlook files
are ok. When I click on DFM I get an error message: "There was an error
locating one of the files to complete this operation. It may have been
deleted. " I then close the error message and the window opens up where i
normally see the little outlook file icon and copy it to my desktop for back
up on an external drive. But the window (name of window is outlook data
files) is empty!!
I ran detect and repair and nothing changed.

Again, all my data (notes, calendar, contacts and tasks) are there and I
can add and delete data from these files as needed. (I don't use the mail
function of Outlook). I have no viruses and system is performing fine
(Windows XP). Other than this issue, which is critical for backing up files-
my Outlook seems to be "fine".
I managed to go into Docs-Settings Local Apps and get the pst file and copy
for a backup but the DFM thing is weird. Please comment and if possible
offer a solution as I think Im supposed to see my Outlook file in the DFM,
instead of just seeing it as a hidden file in my Apps. Folder.

things:

1. detect and repair

2. open outlook using the /cleanprofile switch.

Thaks for the links and your book info- great. as a person with some 1908s
IBM programming skills I like to understand something about the program i am
using and i am TOTALLY IGNORANT about outlook.
now by questions (evolved a bit) were
1) sine outlook is working fine and since i can just back it up by copying
the folder under my docs/ local apps etcetc, WHY WORRY ABOUT the data file
management being empty?? is there a reason to worry?
2) should i just let it be until i upgrade with a new tREO phone, computer
and Office 07 in a year?

if you see noting wrong with LETTING IT BE, ill just ignore. else I will try
to create a new profile. but i want to know....
3) WHY DID MY FILE DISAPPEAR IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Generally "if it ain't broken..." is the best course of action, especially
if you are planning a reformat or a new computer in the near future. So
if it's working ok otherwise, access it via windows explorer to back it up
and move on. You can try a new profile- keep the old one and make a new
one, just to see if it fixes it. Whether you use the new profile is your
decision.

As for why it disappeared, its really hard to know without sitting in from
of it and looking (and playing) around and even then, we may never know.
