This post is just in time.

I have much the same problem. The hard drive will not boot, but I can
access it through a USB enclosure.

To save the contacts, which file should I be looking for and how do I
reconnect it after I re-install the OS on a new hard drive?

pab files are old technology - "address books" are now contacts and stored
in the pst.
