I have Outlook 03 which has an http connection to my hotmail account (I'm not
even sure know what an http connection for Outlook is.) When I try to erase messages off my hotmail account on MSN.com, the messages are erased off of my Outlook 2003, too. I thought if I downloaded them, I could save them on Outlook. How do I erase them off the MSN server without erasing them off Outlook? Thanks in advance. |

Move them from Outlook to a personal folder file.
-- Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook] Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without reading. How do I erase them off the MSN server without erasing them off Outlook? Your confusion is in thinking that messages you view in a Hotmail account are being downloaded to Outlook. While they may be being cached locally in the Hotmail PST, Outlook makes sure that PST contents reflect what's on the server to that deleting something on the server (or, for that matter, adding something to the server) will show the same effect in the Hotmail PST. What I did is to create another folder in my Personal Folders (Outlook Today) PST called "Saved Hotmail" and I drag-and-drop to it those Hotmail messages I want to keep. This not only makes a local copy of the message independent of the Hotmail server, but it also removes them from the Hotmail server, thereby reducing the space I'm using there (not that that's such a concern). -- Brian Tillman |

Thanks Milly and Brian for the clear explanations. I switched from Earthlink
(which I loved) to MSN to cut back on DSL expenses and got a âreally good dealâ on DSL with MSN Premium through with a one year contract. Itâs so different! I started realizing that I hadnât saved any money when I learned that I couldnât use my Outlook 2000 to download emails. Then, when I got 2003, I couldnât set rules to automatically sort and save the large number of emails I get for work into the folder tree I established. I signed a year contract, so Iâll try to figure it out. I still have a question about the following: Brian: What I did is to create another folder in my Personal Folders (Outlook Today) PST called "Saved Hotmail" and I drag-and-drop to it those Hotmail messages I want to keep. This not only makes a local copy of the message independent of the Hotmail server, but it also removes them from the Hotmail server, thereby reducing the space I'm using there (not that that's such a concern).â Right now my Outlook 2003 folder configuration looks like this (hierarchy shown by tabs â hopefully): Personal Folders Deleted Items Drafts Inbox Personal (my folder tree) Work (my folder tree) Junk Email Norton AntiSpam Outbox Sent Items Search Folders MSN Deleted Inbox Junk E-mail Sent Items Question: It will work if I move the emails out of the MSN-INBOX folder into the existing INBOX-WORK folder, right? If I understand correctly, the email saving folder simply has to be under PERSONAL FOLDERS rather than MSNâINBOX for this to work. Just double-checking that I understand so I donât delete another group of messages! Thanks in advance. You've been very helpful. Dragging your messages from the Inbox under MSN to some folder (any folder) under your Personal Folders will move the message from MSN to your local folders and allow you to view them even when not connected to MSN and they will be removed from the MSN folder. -- Brian Tillman |

Sorry I don't have an answerto your question, and I don't know how to get to
the answer of a question. Perhaps someone could tell me how to do this. Then open the Hotmail folder containing what you want to save, select all the items you want to save, and drag them to the folder you created. All done. -- Brian Tillman |
