Default Major Annoyance moving from Windows Messaging to Outlook 2000

For various reasons, I upgraded my Windows Messaging installation to
Outlook 2000. I didn't go to Outlook 2003 because someone told me that
2000 was better for my current application, sending faxes with
Microsoft Fax.

With Windows Messaging, I can use the backspace key go up from sent
items, where I can see that a fax went out, to the next level, where I
can see inbox, outbox, deleted items and sent items. I can move among
these directories with the backspace, cursor, and enter keys. I move
among these directories all the time to verify fax transmissions and
that a failure message did not come through.

With Outlook 2000, when I do a backspace, up level, from sent items, I
get Outlook Today. When I turn that off, nothing appears on the
screen. There seems to be no way to navigate with the keyboard up and
down the inbox and sent items directories in 2000. It seems that what
was simple to do with a few keystrokes in Windows Messaging won't work
in 2000 without using the mouse.

Is there any way to get 2000 to work like Messaging?

So faxing in 2000 seems no different from faxing in Messaging. Would I
be just as well forgetting about 2000 and going back to Messaging?
