Default Blank reading pane

I have done a search but am unable to find the answer.
When i open outlook (2007 xp sp3) send and receive is done. when i try and read any more than about 4 e-mails, the reading pane goes blank or should i say shows the desktop behind.
I have to restart outlook to view the mails?????
wierd or what.
