To repeat the problem I am trying to resolve:
Typing (for e.g)
news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress into the
IE8
address bar has no effect.

Typing news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress
into
the address bar of Chrome or Firefox launches outlook express and opens
the newsgroup. IE6 (and initially IE8) did the same. Now IE8 will not
do
for some reason.

You should add the server

OP started this in the IEAK NG with a different problem description.
It's possible the new problem description has been influenced by replies
he got the

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...&q=ieak+haggas

BTW I just tested this new scenario on my XPsp3 + IE8
where I currently have:

cmd_output
E:\ftype news
news="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1"
/cmd_output

E.g. I entered in the IE Address bar (while the above link was opened)

news:microsoft.public.internet.explorer.ieak

(that NG because it was simpler to type than the above example w)
and got a prompt (which apparently could be avoided by unchecking
a checkbox):

transcription
message
Do you want to allow this website to open a program on your computer?
From: groups.google.com
Program: Outlook Express
/message
checkbox checked
Always ask before opening this type of address
checkbox
button "Allow" /
button "Cancel" /
/transcription

Clicking the Allow button causes a switch to OE open at that IEAK NG.

YMMV

BTW I just realized there is implied functionality in that dialog which
could account for OP's symptom. E.g. what would happen if I:
1. unchecked the checkbox (so presumably I would never see it again)
2. chose Cancel (implying that besides never seeing the prompt
again I also want all subsequent requests to be cancelled?)

If you try testing that case I suggest having ProcMon doing RegMon
tracing for you; otherwise be prepared to do a RIES because I have
no idea where that switch would be stored. eg

FYI

You are going about it the wrong way. If you want OE to open news
links,
it needs to be the default for news links. Your default browser
doesn't
matter.

In IE look at Tools, Internet Options, Programs, is OE set as the
default
for Newsgroups?

In OE look at Tools, Options, General, is it set as the default news
handler?

Also try: Start, Run and enter the following (with the quotation
marks):
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
assuming that is the path to msimn.exe on your PC. This
reinitializes
some registry settings.

OE is the default for newsgroups
OE is the default news handler
Ran the command a "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
and it made no difference.

Made Firefox default then IE8. Made no difference.
FF and Chrome both launch OE even when they are not the default browser.
There must be a corrupt or missing file somewhere. Re-install IE8?
Windows update is up to date.

I recently lost ability to launch a usenet link from IE8 favourites.
Normally OE6 is launched and the newsgroup opened. IE8 has stopped working
in this way even when the news URL is copied directly into the address
bar. Chrome and Firefox browsers continue to work normally and
automatically launch OE. I have not (knowingly) changed any IE8 settings
and it is my default browser.

Advice much appreciated.

(unknowingly) done something to stop this working in IE but not in other
browsers. The "switch" will hopefully reappear when I re-install IE8. I
did try adding the MSnews server and that too is inaccessible from IE8.

Thanks

Did a system restore and all is well.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

To repeat the problem I am trying to resolve:
Typing (for e.g)
news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress into
the IE8
address bar has no effect.

Typing news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress
into
the address bar of Chrome or Firefox launches outlook express and
opens
the newsgroup. IE6 (and initially IE8) did the same. Now IE8 will not
do
for some reason.

You should add the server
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...tlooke xpress

OP started this in the IEAK NG with a different problem description.
It's possible the new problem description has been influenced by
replies
he got the

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...&q=ieak+haggas

BTW I just tested this new scenario on my XPsp3 + IE8
where I currently have:

cmd_output
E:\ftype news
news="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1"
/cmd_output

If you try testing that case I suggest having ProcMon doing RegMon
tracing for you; otherwise be prepared to do a RIES because I have
no idea where that switch would be stored. eg

FYI

It's possible the new problem description has been influenced by
replies
he got the

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...&q=ieak+haggas

BTW I just tested this new scenario on my XPsp3 + IE8
where I currently have:

cmd_output
E:\ftype news
news="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1"
/cmd_output

E.g. I entered in the IE Address bar (while the above link was
opened)

news:microsoft.public.internet.explorer.ieak

(that NG because it was simpler to type than the above example w)
and got a prompt (which apparently could be avoided by unchecking
a checkbox):

transcription
message
Do you want to allow this website to open a program on your computer?
From: groups.google.com
Program: Outlook Express
/message
checkbox checked
Always ask before opening this type of address
checkbox
button "Allow" /
button "Cancel" /
/transcription

Clicking the Allow button causes a switch to OE open at that IEAK NG.

YMMV

BTW I just realized there is implied functionality in that dialog
which
could account for OP's symptom. E.g. what would happen if I:
1. unchecked the checkbox (so presumably I would never see it
again)
2. chose Cancel (implying that besides never seeing the prompt
again I also want all subsequent requests to be cancelled?)

If you try testing that case I suggest having ProcMon doing RegMon
tracing for you; otherwise be prepared to do a RIES because I have
no idea where that switch would be stored. eg

FYI

I did get the above dialogue "Do you want to allow this website to
open a program on your computer?" when first changing to IE8. I
clicked "allow" and for several weeks it worked fine. I have obviously
(unknowingly) done something to stop this working in IE but not in
other browsers. The "switch" will hopefully reappear when I re-install
IE8. I did try adding the MSnews server and that too is inaccessible
from IE8.

Thanks

David

Did a system restore and all is well.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

David.

To repeat the problem I am trying to resolve:
Typing (for e.g)
news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress into
the IE8
address bar has no effect.

Typing news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress
into
the address bar of Chrome or Firefox launches outlook express and
opens
the newsgroup. IE6 (and initially IE8) did the same. Now IE8 will
not do
for some reason.

You should add the server

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...tlooke xpress

OP started this in the IEAK NG with a different problem description.
It's possible the new problem description has been influenced by
replies
he got the

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...&q=ieak+haggas

BTW I just tested this new scenario on my XPsp3 + IE8
where I currently have:

cmd_output
E:\ftype news
news="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1"
/cmd_output

If you try testing that case I suggest having ProcMon doing RegMon
tracing for you; otherwise be prepared to do a RIES because I have
no idea where that switch would be stored. eg

FYI

I did get the above dialogue "Do you want to allow this website to open
a program on your computer?" when first changing to IE8. I clicked
"allow" and for several weeks it worked fine. I have obviously
(unknowingly) done something to stop this working in IE but not in
other browsers. The "switch" will hopefully reappear when I re-install
IE8. I did try adding the MSnews server and that too is inaccessible
from IE8.

Thanks

David

Did a system restore and all is well.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

David.

To repeat the problem I am trying to resolve:
Typing (for e.g)
news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress into
the IE8
address bar has no effect.

Typing news:microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_out lookexpress
into
the address bar of Chrome or Firefox launches outlook express and
opens
the newsgroup. IE6 (and initially IE8) did the same. Now IE8 will not
do
for some reason.
