Default Crashing Outlook Express

Thanks Tim K.

Hi Norm,

The most common cause is corruption in the OE message store folder. This
folder contains the OE data base files (type: *.dbx). Often the corruption
is in one of the most used OE folders. Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items and Deleted
Items are likely candidates. It could be one message that OE has a problem
with and needs removal. The master indexing file, Folders.dbx, often causes
an error if it becomes damaged. Deleting this file will result in loss of
the OE folder hierarchy and loss of the list of subscribed newsgroups.

You could try renaming (or deleting) one DBX file at a time. Or move all
files out of the store folder letting OE create new empty folders when
started. It would also be possible to create a new OE identity, starting
with a clean slate. The data could be imported into the second identity, but
there is chance the corrupted file would also be imported.

Before beginning to fix the problem you'll need to back-up any messages or
other data you don't want to lose. Sometimes compacting all folders will fix
minor corruption. This would be done from the OE File menu Folders Compact
ALL Folders. This is most safely done in offline mode. Be sure not to do
anything until the process of compacting is complete. Interrupting the
process will (likely) result in loss of messages.

You may be able to determine when the problem occurs, such as during a
send/receive or when opening a particular folder.

Open the Store Folder

(Note: (*.dbx) files are normally hidden in Win XP or Win 2000. It may be
necessary to change the folder view to allow showing hidden files)

Instead of using search the store folder can be opened directly. Each
identity has its own store folder.

a.. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store
Folder.
b.. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder.
c.. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end.
d.. Right-click on the text and choose Copy.
e.. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store
folder.
f.. Close Outlook Express before working with the message store files.

An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to
highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use Start/Run
and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily
modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options.

Your post did not make it to the Microsoft NNTP support server. Others may
be able to help if the question is asked there.

Group, My Outlook Express keeps crashing at random. The pop-up window reads
Outlook Express has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close. The Dr.
Watson Post-Mortem Debugger also displays the same Needs to Close window.
What are some common reasons that cause Outlook Express to crash? Thank
you.

Norm
