Program Problems

I am running Windows XP Home/SP3, IE 7, and Outlook Express 6. I believe
Outlook Express has become corrupted as it takes over a minute to open, is
extremely slow to download new messages (on a high-speed internet
connection), etc. What I would like to do is uninstall Outlook Express
completely and download a fresh copy. Since it appears Outlook Express is
"buried" within Internet Explorer/Windows and is not shown in the Add/Remove
Programs list, I don't know how to do the uninstall. Can you help please.

You can't uninstall OE.

Performance Problems:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/performance.htm

Also, clean up what isn't mentioned in the link.

1: Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user
defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty
Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity
of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption.

Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by
Outlook Express:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095

2: After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

3: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems
such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program
will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

For some programs, turning it off is not enough. You may have to uninstall
it and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when offered.

Bruce:
Thank you for the info. Unfortunately I regularly follow your suggestions
regarding compacting folders and cleaning our sent, deleted, and incoming
mail files, and also turned off Norton Internet Security 2010 email scanning
- it didn't help. I'm wondering if I download another browser (like FireFox)
to give me an alternate internet access, and then remove Internet Explorer 7,
would that also remove Outlook Express? If so, then couldn't I go to the
Microsoft website and download fresh IE and OE programs? Would that work?

If you remove IE7, you will revert back to IE6. You may have to remove SP3
first if installed. Even so, If you try to download another IE6/OE6, you
will just get an error message that they are already installed.

Close OE and delete Folders.dbx in the message store and see if that helps.

If not, try a new identity and make it the default identity so OE opens to
that ID. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book and
delete the old identity.

Canned

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.

Note: Do not use the word Main in the name of the new identity.
