problem sending .wav attachement
 

A friend is sending me a .wav file as an attachement, however the email shows
up in my inbox as a number of separate emails filled with a solid block of
random characters.

I suspect there is something going on with my friend's outlook as I can send
..wav attachemnts to other people without problem.

Any explanation as to why this occurs and how to fix it?

Could the WAV file be so big that the outgoing Email is breaking it up into
multiple Emails? Have them send you a shout WAV as a test.

Is your friend using Outlook Express? Have him/her go to Tools | Accounts |
Mail | Properties | Advanced and uncheck: "Break apart messages.........."
and then send it to you.

Assuming your friend is using Outlook Express have him go to Tools,
Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced and uncheck the Break apart option
to stop that in the future.

As for the messages that you have, if they are all there, you can
recover the attachment. Highlight all the parts (hold Ctrl key while
clicking each part, or use shift-click for a range), then select Message
(OE5+) then Combine and Decode and follow the steps. You will end up
with a message window with the decoded attachment file that you can then
save, and use as desired (File, Save Attachment).

If using OE5 and above, turn off the Preview Pane (View, Layout) to
avoid the delays with OE searching for hyperlinks. You can add a button
to the tool bar for this.

My friend is using Outlook Express 6.0 and tried unchecking the break apart
messages. However when he went to send with attachement, a message appeared
saying the email was too long for one note.

We exchanged a very small 54kb wave file without a problem. It just seems
the larger files are getting broken appart.

Tell your friend to check with his internet service provider. Many of them
have a size limit per e-mail message. Mine has a 7mb limit, so when I need
to send a music file to people in my band, I use software like this
http://www.poikosoft.com/ to shrink the files a bit.

I'm kind of thinking that as well, however I also have an account with the
same provider and can send large attachements. It could be possible that he
may be "leaving mail on the server" which might cause problems"

Both the sender's and recipient's ISPs place limits on maximum message
size. Any message must be under both limits.

Also, encoding necessary to send attachments adds about 40% overhead.
So if the ISP limits were 1 MB, the largest attachment you can send
without the break apart option would be about 700 KB.

If you mean you're leaving YOUR mail on the server, then yes. It's possible
your mailbox is just full enough to not allow a large email to land there.
Error messages regarding email size are notoriously uninformative. How about
this: With many ISPs, you can set up more than one mail box. If you can do
that, set up a separate one just for .wav files.

Incidentally, the only good reason to leave mail on a server is if you
intend to access it from more than one computer. If that's not the case, it
doesn't make much sense.

The beta on this is our service provider puts a 8MB cap on emails. So what
happend is Outlook invokded the option "break apart large files" and did so
accordingly.
