Outlook Express viewing question

I used to be able to see people's e-mail messages with pictures, or just a
written joke they pass along, just by clicking them open. Now, after my
DSL switch and clean up by a tech, all my messages (that are not directly
written text just for me) have attachments. I just received an e-mail
with 5 dog pictures, which appeared on my reply e-mail to the sender, and I
had to click an assortment of ATT.... attachments to see them appear on my
end. Also, just received a joke e-mail and instead of just being able to
read it upon clicking the e-mail open, I had to go up and click the
attachment called Haircut.eml.
I never had to do this before. Everything was visible from the get go.
Have my settings changed? Please help. This is a hassle.

Sounds like someone has changed your settings in Outlook Express' menu,
Tools/Options/Read to "Read all in Plain Text." While it can be a useful
feature, it's your choice if you want to see HTML messages as they were
intended. You should also review the settings under Tools/Options/Security
and the information in this article:

Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2: Part 4:
E-mail Handling Technologies:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2email.mspx

After you finish reading that, I'd suggest you visit the Windows Update page
and download/install all updates for your system that are marked as
"Critical."

Hi kayjay,

Reading messages in Plain Text is the default setting to allow for maximum
safety from viruses and general security concerns. You might start the
troubleshooting by reviewing the setting. I'm not sure how Haircut.eml
became an attachment.

To turn off the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that
could potentially be a virus option:

1. Start Outlook Express.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the Security tab, click to clear the Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box
under Virus Protection, and then click OK.
