Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently.

If that does not resolve it, the Outbox is damaged.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In Windows XP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options |
View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Outbox.dbx}
and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: FileWork Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status
Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the
compacting is completed.

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

1. Move anything you want to keep out of Outbox and into another OE folder.

2. Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of
your current Identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down.

In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as
hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files
and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options View.

3. Close OE.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store and delete Outbox.dbx. All
should now be well.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Are you getting any error message on sending?

Are the recipients receiving their messages?

A few possibilities:

1) You might have a message with a bad TO address in the Outbox. OE
will try to send this every time it wants to send mail and the server
will reject it. In this case, select the Outbox folder, highlight the
problem message and press the delete key.

2) This could be a corrupted Outbox folder in Outlook Express:
- Close Outlook Express.
- OE5+: Locate the file outbox.dbx in the mail directory and delete it.
You can use Start, Find (or Search), Files or Folders, outbox.dbx to
find it. On Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden or System
files in the folder options and XP you need to use the advanced options
to find Hidden or System files. (You can also determine the location by
looking in OE at Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder.)
- Open Outlook Express again. It will create a new empty Outbox.

3) If the recipients are getting their messages, then it could also be a
corrupted Sent Items folder.
- Close Outlook Express
- Rename the file Sent Items.dbx to Sentold.dbx You can use Start, Find
(or Search), Files or Folders, "Sent Items.dbx" to find it. On Win2000
you need enable the display of Hidden or System files in the folder
options and XP you need to use the advanced options to find Hidden or
System files. (You can also determine the location by looking in OE at
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder.)
- Open Outlook Express again.
- It will create a new empty Sent Items.
- The following program may be able to recover some of the messages from
the Sentold.dbx file.
DBXtract - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
With a very large DBX file, this can take hours or days.
- You can then open OE and select the Sent Items and drag the recovered
EML files back into it.
