Default Cannot receive 'Error Number: 0x80004005'

I xxx'd out my account name on the OExpress error I keep getting today right
after I booted up. I Googled a fix for it applicable to OExpress 4 - tried
it & it did not work.

OExpress error:
"An unknown error has occurred. xxxxxxxxx Protocol: POP3, Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x80004005"

I checked & verified that I am using the correct server settings for my
Internet service provider.
When this error appeared some months ago I discovered my settings had been
corrupted & resetting them fixed the issue. What now?

Please advise - thanks
Blithe

See if disabling Email Scanning by Avast clears up the problem (see below).

Also see this recent & related conversation:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...f7eef3f501480/

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

QP
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Bruce (Hello! That's my name too. Blithe is an alias.)
Full error msg:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'skylark', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x80004005

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Z_myobnn', Server:
'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

NOTE: I get both errors simultaneously (1) skylark is my primary address (2)
My AT&T Yahoo DSL account allows additional addresses thru yahoo mail - I
set both addresses to synchronize when receiving mail. Note that the port
and SSL settings differ between these addresses - by design. Also note - I
have for months been receiving a daily ATT Yahoo email warning me I am using
insecure settings. Sure I complained. ATT Customer Service advised me to
ignore the messages.

UPDATE: Between my 1st message & your response, I downloaded the latest ATT
Self Support software that specifically checks to correct email settings.
It reported finding no problems with either my OExpress email or Internet
connections. Since I was able to send my message to your newsgroup - it
would appear receiving mail is my only issue.

I am using Windows 2000 Pro SP4 & OExpress 6. I have had no recent issues of
any kind. I seldom do. I keep updated manually via Windows Update. I will
wait to hear from you before I try my last resort - contacting ATT so-called
Customer Service.

Thanks for your advice.

Too much for me, but hang around awhile. One of the regulars, (Norman

given up trying to keep track.

No Easy or acceptable Resolution for this issue

FYInfo _ I spent an hour on the phone with ATT Yahoo tech service. We
discovered the email I could not receive on OE 6 had been delivered to my
ATT Yahoo web mail account - not my choice for receiving email. Bottom
line, we concluded that my OExpress 6 has been corrupted. I could attempt a
reinstallation of W2K and perform a restore but that's just too much work &
no guarantee of success. There's just no way to easily uninstall/reinstall
OE 6 since it's such an integral part of IExplorer. I could buy Outlook as
a replacement - & maybe that's still an option. I downloaded Mozilla's
Thunderbird and imported OE files - still not a perfect remedy - but it's
free so I'll give it a trial for now.

Thank you both for your consideration.

Actually, Bruce, I found & executed a new identity solution but I must not
have tested it properly. I read your last msg & tested. It worked - no
error message. Then I switched to the old identity & upon clicking to
receive all mail - I got no error there either (no mail on server at that
point). I still have work to do. I could not export my newsgroup files for
the new identity as an exporting error kept repeating. This is all very
mystifying but I'll consider it a learning experience and feel like I'm
still shooting below par. Thanks again. I have not suffered irreparable
loss of data (my OE files are backed up via 'Express Assist') or function -
just the time and frustration we all must pay for the benefits of high tech.

This is not the first time I have seen a new identity created, only to fix
the problem identity. I have no idea why this sometimes happens. If you went
to Tools | Accounts | News and trying to export, it would probably work now,
but that only exports the account settings to a folder of your choice. In
the new identity you would have to import them. Groups would have to be
resubscribed to.

Outlook Express is a learning experience every day. Glad you have it
somewhat fixed.

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not
attempt
to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic
Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can

cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional
protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

QP
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against

viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of

this.
To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection,
keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you
have
the most recent virus definitions.

I xxx'd out my account name on the OExpress error I keep getting

tried
it & it did not work.

OExpress error:
"An unknown error has occurred. xxxxxxxxx Protocol: POP3, Port:

Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x80004005"

I checked & verified that I am using the correct server settings

When this error appeared some months ago I discovered my settings

had
been
corrupted & resetting them fixed the issue. What now?
