Default Outlook Express Sending mail PROBLEM

Hi Helpers,
I am not sure whether PA Bear is referring to me as other OP? I can only
send new posts and cannot use a post from someone else to reply to. I DO NOT
have Outlook installed, I am only using OutlookExpress.

I can receive all emails, compose & send new emails but I cannot use someone
elses email to me to respond/reply to them. The same problems exists with
newsgroup postings.

Default Outlook Express Sending mail PROBLEM

OP = Original Poster (one who started the thread)

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. See if the behavior persists in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages from
the old Identity before deleting it (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

You would do best to keep tour messages in the same thread and not start a
new post. I makes it harder for us to help.

You have not stated what you have done as far as the suggestions that have
been already given to you.

Did you turn off e-mail scanning?
Did you create a new identity?
Did you delete the dbx files for the Outbox, Sent Items, and Pop3iudl?

Sorry Bruce but I couldn't reply in the same thread. Have deleted the dbx
files you suggested and the problem now appears to be fixed. Thanks for your
and others help.

To wit:

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Sent Items,
Outbox and Pop3iudl.dbx} and delete them. New ones will be created
automatically when you open OE.

Altogether now: AMEN!

Default Outlook Express Sending mail PROBLEM

I had already turned off the email scanning (it is now running again) and at
one time I had uninstalled the antivirus program totally. Didn't make any
difference.
I have created a new identity but I guess so long as my "old" one now works
ok - I do not need to use it. Comments about folders are noted and received
emails will be placed in new folders. I always keep the Sent Items email
folder empty along with the Deleted Items folder.

Thanks again

If the old one was the default Main Identity, I wouldn't trust it, given the
problems you've had. (Email scanning was probably responsible for the
corruption, and it's probably still damaged.)

Import messages from the old identity into the new one, then delete the old
one.

Oh, and backup, backup, backup!

For some years, now, one of my steps, when setting up a new Windows OS, is
to immediately after the Windows Updates, and security lockdown, create a
new MS Outlook Express Identity. Before ever setting up any accounts. Then
I delete the Main Identity. From now on, I have a clean Identity. Follow
the procedures about not archiving messages in the default folder. By doing
this, I have yet to find issues with corrupted mailboxes in MSOE.
