Redirect mail to another computor on LAN
 

Hi,
We have 3 computers on a LAN (all connect to ISP via ADSL). Any one of us
can and does open Outlook Express on their unit and download the emails.
We have only one account i.e. . At present we redirect the
mail to each other by " File/Save as" to a directory on the appropriate
machine. Problem is some of us forget to do this and others forget to check
their "directory" for mail .

1)Is it possible to redirect the email to that machines Express folders
inbox.

2) Although we all use the same email address all emails sent to us has a
different subject line i.e. Tom , Dick or Harry. Could Express redirect to
the correct machines inbox using the subject line as a "Rule"

3) We can give each user their own alias.. Is it possible to do 1 and/or 2
above using the alias.

I heard there was an OE add-on as well as a way to make each machine to be a
mini server. ?

Easiest way:

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. On all the machines, check:
Leave a copy of messages on the server. Each person can download the same
mail now. Make sure to also check to Delete after X days, or the server will
eventually get choked up.

Hi Tom,

With each user having an alias it would be possible to use message rules to
not download messages meant for another user (Do not download from server).

Another, less effective or desired, approach would be to leave messages on
the server for a few days.

Advanced tab in account properties for a POP3 account.

This would allow all users to receive all messages if received within the
time frame.

In Outlook Express
Tools | Message Rules Mail

Note: "people" can be the user name or a full e-mail address. The full
address would be less likely to interfere with another rule.

Tip: A condition can be reversed in the Advanced section.

1. Select the Conditions for your rule:

Where the From line contains people
Where the Subject line contains specific words
Where the message body contains specific words

Where the To line contains people

Where the CC line contains people
Where the message is marked as priority
Where the message is from the specified account
Where the message size is more than the size
Where the message has an attachment
Where the message is secure
For all messages

Tip: Most rules work best with "stop processing more rules" also selected.

2. Select the Actions for your rule:

Move it to the specific folder
Copy it to the specific folder
Delete it
Forward it to people
Highlight it with color
Flag it
Mark it as read
Mark the message as watched or ignored
Reply with message
Stop processing more rules

Do not Download it from the server

Delete it from server

If you start using aliases, from another post:

If is only running in OE on the desktop and is only
running in OE on the laptop *and* the addresses are not aliases for the same
mail account (AKA mailbox) at ISP.com, then yes, you've got it right.

If they /are/ aliases for the same mail account, you'll need to use Message
Rules to filter messages on both machines. The following refers to two
addresses, but you should be able to follow it and amend for three or more.

In the OE identity associated with , create a Message Rule
stating, "Where To or CC contains , Do not download it from the
server" and place this rule at the very top of the list.

Then create a similar rule for the OE identity associated with
directing any messages addressed to not to be downloaded from the
server.

You can create a message rule,
on Tom's computer
if the Subject line contains specific words, Stop processing more rules.
Click on contains specific words, Add Tom.

Create a rule on each computer changing the name.

If you use rules to divert messages as Tim and Ron suggested, the you don't
have to leave a copy of the message on the server,

I was hoping for a system that did not utilise leaving the message on the
server.
Although I know one can not have everything I was looking for a system
/add-on/ whatever that would still download all the mail and then, via the
LAN, redirect the mail to the other users unit (their inbox folder within
OE)

Set up an IMAP server on one of the computers. I use Mercury Mail:

Use the computer which is mostly always on; it will have to be on for the
times when you access the other computer. Set up the Mercury Mail POP3
Distributing client to fetch your email from your POP3 servers. They will
be kept on the disk of the computer running Mercury Mail. Set up the
Mercury Mail IMAP4 server. Log in from whichever computer you are on using
your favorite IMAP capable email program; MS Outlook Express works just
fine this way. None of the other modules need to be selected.

Just to add to what the others said. You can also swap the entire dbx files
between machines, either manually using the method in the last paragraph on
this page (www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx) or you can import the messages from
various message stores across the network (www.oehelp.com/OEX/) just by
pointing to the dbx files.
