Default Icon named custom appearing on desktop

Greetings,
Could someone please advise me as to how to stop an icon labelled 'custom'
from appearing on my desktop every time I send an e-mail in OE 6. Only 1
icon ever appears if I leave it on the desktop, no matter how many e-mails
are sent. I can delete it without any problems, yet as soon as I send
another e-mail, Presto! there it is again. If I open the icon, Adobe Reader
opens and loads and then provides the following message: "Adobe Reader could
not open 'custom.dic' because it is either not a supported file type or
because the file has been corrupted (for example, it is sent as an email
attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." This .dic file has 0KB, as
indicated in Recycle Bin (Norton). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Rob

I have Windows 98 SE. Spell Check in OE 6 works. The only other Spell
Check I use is in Microsoft Works 2000 and it works as well.

If you Right click the icon and select properties, does it say the full
file name is Custom.dic?

If so, that's the custom dictionary used by the spell checker. It
contains words that you add while doing a spell checker. It shouldn't
be going to the desk top. Its location is controlled by the registry.

See:
Spell Checker or Custom Dictionary Errors
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=178238

It shows you what the registry entry for the custom dictionary should
be.

However, if you want, you can just leave it at the desk top. It doesn't
cause any harm.

and go to

start
settings
folder options
view
and uncheck "Hide file extensions for Known File types"
because
for the displayed name "Custom"
* clicking on custom.dic wont do much harm,
* clicking on custom.exe or custom.vbs can do a lot of harm

Thx Mike,
I checked the registry entry and it is the same. Of course, now that I am
trying to get the icon to appear on my desktop after sending an email so
that I can right click it for properties, it doesn't appear! Perhaps
because I just previously opened MS Works and tried the spell checker for
the first time in a while?

This is my 1st time using newsgroups. Have I been missing out! You guys
are a wealth of info. Cheers!!
