Anway to use Outlook Exp from an external drive ?
I travel quite a bit and would prefer not to take
my laptop all the time. I've got an External Hard drive that I keep all my stuff on and it's convenient to just take it along and plug into someone else's laptop where I'm at. The only drawback is that I don't have my e-mails that I have saved for flw up's, etc. Would be nice if I could somehow use my Outlook Express from my External HD rather than the laptop's HD. Any ideas???? Thanks ! |

You could create a folder on your external hard drive and drag email saved
for flw up's into the folder. Ken "Bubey" wrote in message ... | I travel quite a bit and would prefer not to take | my laptop all the time. How would you install OE on a flash drive?
When you're travelling without your laptop, access your mail via your account's webmail page using a browser. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ Bubey wrote: I travel quite a bit and would prefer not to take my laptop all the time. If I do that Pa Bear, I only get the "new"
e-mails, not the old ones that I have save in folders under the Local Folders specifically named for the vendor or ? that I created in OE. I wanted to be able to access all the folders that I created, not just the incoming one. "PA Bear" wrote in message ... How would you install OE on a flash drive? Each email would save as an eml file.
Notepad or any text editing program would read the eml files. The eml files will use the email subject for the file's name, so emails with the same subject will have the same name. -- Ronald Sommer "Bubey" wrote in message ... No. That is why I said create a folder on the external drive and drag saved flw up's into the folder. You can create as many folders as you want. With a few clicks you can select every message or selected messages in Outlook Express and drag the bunch of them into your created folder. It is going to take me longer to write this then to actually do it. Create your folder on the external drive, drag it to the far right side of the screen, open Outlook Express and resize the screen so you an see your created folder, select the first message you want, scroll to the last message and hold down shift key while clicking it, all messages in-between will highlight, hold down the left mouse button and drag highlighted messages to created folder. This will copy all selected messages into created folder, they will have .eml extension To select individual messages hold the ctrl key down when selecting each message. What program would I use to read these msg's on hard drive with ? When you double click a message in created folder it should open in whatever program the person uses for their default email program. If you have your external drive plugged into a computer and their default email program is Outlook Express the message will open in Outlook Express. And as Ron said you can use Notepad to open the messages. Note: When viewing messages in created folder, I would choose View, on it's menu choose Detail or List. If you want access to messages archived in OE but no longer on the mail
server, you'll have to take your laptop along with you, I'm afraid. -- ~PA Bear Bubey wrote: If I do that Pa Bear, I only get the "new" e-mails, not the old ones that I have save in folders under the Local Folders specifically named for the vendor or ? that I created in OE. Buy the program called DBxtract from http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx (A whole $7).
and make your backups on the external drive. Then you can open any of these files on another computer. "Bubey" wrote in message ...
