I will try this for the 3rd time. For those of you that were so kind as to
provide URLs to other websites, the information was useless as it only told me how to backup drive "C", but not how to retrieve messages from a drive "D" or "E" or other such hard drive. My old computer died after 6 years and the hard drive is loaded with emails in the OE "inbox" and "sent items", which I very much need to recover and move to my new comnputer. My address book is also on the (old hard drive), which I also need to recover. It is critical that I recover these emails and my address book so I purchased a USB Hard Drive Enclosure Kit. However, I am having trouble finding my address book and the emails I want to transfer to my new computer. Accessing the old hard drive is not a problem, but finding what I want is a problem. Can someone please explain (step-by-step) how I can find and import the saved emails and address book into the OE on my new computer? Again, these are on a drive that was not backed up. The computer dies unexpectedly and I need to recover the emails from the old drive. Again, I am asking for (step-by-step) instructions from someone that knows how to do this. Please help!! Thanks a million, |

Search for *.dbx files on the old drive. Include hidden files in the
search. In OE, File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6 | Import mail from an OE6 store directory. Press Next then press the BROWSE button. Navigate to the folder on the old drive, select it, then press OK Finish up the import. Search for *.wab files on the old drive. Address Book will just be File | Import | Address Book then navigate to the old WAB file and finish the import of it. From Bruce Hagan: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. -- Ron Sommer "Michelle" wrote in message ... I will try this for the 3rd time. This seems to put me on the right track, as I have found the files (in hidden
folders). But, when I try FileImportMessages, I can only get to "Documents and Settings\Michelle\" but can't get to "Local Settings", as there is no option. How do I proceed from there to get to the files to be imported? Thanks "Eugene" wrote: Messages: 1. Connect your old hard drive to the new PC. 2. In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under StartControl PanelFolder OptionsView. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Michelle" wrote in message ...
