Receiving Messages When I Open Outlook Express

Hi,

I have just started experiencing an issue when I first open up my Outlook
Express. Normally, I would click on the OE Icon on my desktop and it would
prompt me fora password and then prompt me for another password as I have
additional security enabled. Once I entered the second passwork the Inbox
would open and a "Send/Receive" box would come up which showed that the
system was retreiving / downloading mail and how many messages it was
retrieving.

All of a sudden now - I go through the same routine but the "Send/Receive"
box never comes up. It seems as though it gets by-passed and then all of a
sudden the messages appear in my inbox. I know this appears to be minor, but
I like to see how many messages are being downloaded before thaey hot the
inbox especially because of size, etc. Does anyone have any idea as to what
happened and how I can get that "Sernd/Receive" box back when I first sign on
to OE? I will tell you that once I;m in the Inbox and I manually click on the
"send/Receive" box on the OE toolbar, it does function properly.

I should also mention that this only started ocuring about 3 days ago, when
my computer prompted me that new downloads were available for my computer and
I did go ahead and download them. I'm guessing it might be related.. I have
Windows XP Professional. Thanks in advnace for your help.

Do you close OE by using the X or by going fileexit.

Try the latter and see if that makes a difference to behavior?

Thanks for your resonse, Charlie, but I do exit OE by doing file/exit so I
don't think thats the issue. Short of hearing other people's input in this
forum, the only other thing I could do is reset my computer back to January 5
which is when I updated the computer and see if it still does it. I am trying
to avoid that if possible.

I asked because that forces the password to log in, X leaves the last user
logged in and so is not quite the same - you probably knew that but a lot of
people don't :)

Try unchecking the box in options "Send and receive at startup".

If it's already unchecked than check it, close OE, uncheck close OE again
then see what happens. I have seen this work on a couple of occasions but
have no idea why :)

I assume the first password is for the ID, the second for the mail server.
and the second should not pop up if send/recv at startup is unchecked until
you manually select send / recv button or else the timer takes over...

I understand the reluctance to go back to Jan 5th, and if it IS an update
that's caused this then you still probably need that update ... in fact if
it was the WMF update you definitely do need it and in any case I see no
reason for that to affect OE.

Don't give up just yet, see what others come up with, maybe I am just
missing the point somewhere :)

That box only shows for me when I do a manual Send/Receive. When I open OE,
I only see it checking for mail in the Status Bar.

That said, if the problem is fixed by a System Restore, (removing the
updates), try downloading the updates with your anti-virus turned off. It
often causes a bad install of updates and should be turned off when you
download anything.

Thanks guys. Your answer is interesting, Bruce. It sounds like what you are
experiencing in OE as far as receiving messages is the same as what I am now
experiencing, but it doesn't seem to bother you. Up until three days ago, I
have always had that box come up automatically as soon as I enter mu second
password, which shows the messages received and in-process downloading. I
still do get that box it when I do it manually, but I guess I just like to
see it when I first get into OE as well. I like to see what is being
downloaded. Creature of habit I guess.

You know I thought of another idea as well which is to reinstall OE. Is that
even possible? I Think OE installs as aprt of the Internet Explorer download.
Is there a way to remove the OE I have and then reinstall just OE again?
Maybe that will do the trick.

I'm wondering if that box is being brought up by your extra security, or a
registry setting.

Either way, is the problem fixed if you remove the updates? If it is I would
do like I said with your A/V off. Easier than a reinstall.

If you really want to do this:

How to Reinstall or Repair IE6 and OE6:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Although written for WinXP, it works for all Windows operating systems 98 or
newer.

If you are using WinXP/SP2, and it was not already on your computer from the
factory, you will have to remove SP2 first.

How to remove SP2:

Hi Frank,

The same thing happened to me several weeks ago, but I did not record the
date of the occurrence.

I believe it would be best not to try to return to an earlier version to
regain past behavior. It's not a good trade-off (feature vs. updates). It
would probably be only a (short) matter of time until another update changed
the behavior back again.
