Managing Multiple Identities
I'm having trouble managing multiple identities in Outlook Express. I have a
main Bigpond account with a secondary user on this account. When emails are sent to the secondary user, they sometimes get through but other times get diverted to the main account. I've tried all sorts of things like changing defaults etc. but nothing seems to fix the problem completely. I'm baffled why this can't be overridden somehow as it seems silly to have a secondary user account but those emails don't always necessarily get through to the right user. Either respond here or directly to me at Thanks |

Managing Multiple Identities
It sounds like they are aliases for the same mailbox on the server. The
first account to access the server will download everything in the account. You will have to use Message Rules. There is no perfect set of rules, but you can get a fairly good approximation. First you have to decide which user is the administrative user. We'll call that one User A and the other User B. For User B, first go to Tools | Accounts and double click the account. On the Advanced tab check the option to Leave a copy on the server and to Delete messages after 5 days. Change 5 to a number of days that you are SURE will have had User A downloading messages. Then make this Message Rule: Where To or CC does not contain [User B] Do not download from server. The Not becomes available if you click Options after putting in the name. If user B also has other rules, put that rule at the top and add "Stop processing more rules" to the rule. For User A you need two Rules. First, create a mail folder named Examine or something for mail that doesn't fit the first rule. Then set User A's account to leave mail on the server for a number of days that you are SURE will have had User B downloading messages. The first (top) rule will be this: Where To or CC contains [User A] Stop processing more rules The second will be: For all messages Move to Examine, or whatever you named the folder. After you have entered the rules they will all start with Apply this rule after the message arrives Mail that had User A or User B in the BCC field will end up in User A's Examine folder along with a lot of the spam. As I indicated, these rules are not perfect, but they are the best I could do when my wife and I had aliases for the same account. I eventually got her an entirely separate account with the ISP. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup only.
