OE6 Stopped Working With Hotmail Plus
Last week OE6 suddenly stopped working with my hotmail plus account. In the
past this would happen occasionally and the problem would clear up on its own the next day. However this time it has been over a week. I am convinced there is a problem with the hotmail servrer but Hotmail tech suport deny this and directed me to OE6 support. OE6 works fine with another e mail account and also with other newsgroups. It just refuses to work with hotmail any more. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Kind Regards Chris I got the error message: Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. OE6 Stopped Working With Hotmail Plus
I appreciate all the help from everyone. Winston, as you suggested, I ticked
SSL for incoming and outgoing mail in the advanced section of the POP3 set up in OE6 and now the POP3 account seems to work with the same e mail address and all the items in my inbox were downloaded to OE6. This helps and will give me some breathing space until I can get the http hotmail to work. Unfortunately, the items in Sent items on the hotmail server were not downloaded to OE6. However there are still two issues: 1- Is there any way of adjusting the POP3 settings so the sent items folder on my hotmail account will be downloaded to OE6? All new items sent by IE6 will show up in IE6 but there were many messages I sent from the hotmail website while I was experiencing the problem and these messages are still on the hotmail server and I wish to get them into IE6 without having to forward them to my inbox. 2- I wonder if the http mail account problem in OE6 will cure itself or whether I can adjust the http account settings to see if there is a work around? Glad to hear the ssl setting made it functional.
1. A pop3 account's Sent folder in OE only stores mail sent from the account created in OE and only from the time that account was created in OE provided OE/Tools/Options/Send/Save sent items is enabled. Workaround for the online sent items is to use the inbox on both accounts..which you desire to avoid. If you change your mind here's a few choices. If you have only one email account setup in OE is - open OE and create a user created folder e.g. SentOld - close OE - logon to your account via the hotmail web site - ensure your account is converted to a Live Hotmail account using the full version interface - open the Sent Items folder and change the status of all messages to 'Unread', they should change to boldface type. - Move all messages to the Inbox, then log off - open OE and downlaod the messages, once retreived move them from the Inbox to the Sent Old folder If you have a different email account in OE exclusive of your pop/http created accounts, then they can be forwarded to that account and dragged to any user created folder. If you use the web site you'll have to do this each time new sent messages are generated with the use of the web site. If your http account starts working in OE and you wish to keep the messages locally in the OE default Sent Items folder, you'll have to drag them to that location. Additionally - note that using the pop3 settings also does not download the Junk Mail folders contents, thus a visit to the web site is required to filter anything that should not be junk. - any existing Junk Mail filter setttings via the Options/Junk Mail on the web site will continue to function(e.g. if you have exclusive enable then only mail to your online Contacts will be delivered to the online or the pop3 inbox) Finally, Caution-OE is temperamental about the size of the message stores..it is recommended to store messages in user created folders instead of OE default folders and even better to store what you deem as important content outside of OE in a folder created via Windows Explorer(drag an drop). As insurance, compact OE regularly and preferably after toggling the Work Offline option. 2. There is really nothing to adjust, beyond removal of the account and recreation, if the hotmail accounts settings are correct. ...winston MS-MVP Windows Live Mail "Chris" wrote in message ... Hi. I have the same problem but in MS Outlook 2003. It used to work but
now just keeps asking for my password. I had Hotmail Plus and it worked for a few months, but suddenly stopped some months ago. I use webmail and haven't had time to deal with it, but as I use Outlook extensively for work would appreciate the ability to use it as this is why I paid in the first place! I have looked it up on the web on various occasions but haven't come across any attept at a solution to the problem till now. There are also warnings on the web that it is extremely difficult to contact Microsoft re any Hotmail Plus issues.. They sent me an email to which I couldn't reply 2 days ago saying I was to be rebilled for this year. I've tried everything on this very helpful page. Any more suggestions? Once the account is created, edit the account properties with the correct address and ensure the live.com servers, port numbers, SSL encryption and authentication are set properly. -- ...winston MS-MVP Windows Live Mail "PA Bear" wrote in message ... Crossposted to MSN Discussion and OE General newsgroups to reach the widest audience. Despite what you were told, the error points to problems/changes on MSN/Hotmail's end, not yours or OE. Did you tell the MSN/Hotmail tech that you're a Hotmail Plus subscriber? That being said, see this recent entry in the Windows Live Hotmail blog about accessing Hotmail Plus accounts via POP3: http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/Blog...33!44348.entry You'll need to create a new Account for this POP3 access: 1. OE Tools Accounts Mail Click on NEW. 2. Populate the Servers tab per the instructions at the end of the above blog entry: QP Our POP service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and use SMTP authentication. This is to ensure that your email address and password are not subject to tampering. The settings are the following: POP: pop3.live.com (port 995) SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25) Note: make sure you check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default). Username: your full email address Password: your Windows Live ID password /QP On the Advanced tab, change the Incoming (POP) port from 110 to 995. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ Chris wrote: Last week OE6 suddenly stopped working with my hotmail plus account. In the past this would happen occasionally and the problem would clear up on its own the next day. However this time it has been over a week. I am convinced there is a problem with the hotmail servrer but Hotmail tech suport deny this and directed me to OE6 support. OE6 works fine with another e account and also with other newsgroups. It just refuses to work with hotmail any more. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Kind Regards Chris I got the error message: Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. OE6 Stopped Working With Hotmail Plus
I wish to thank everyone who helped me with this issue. The problem has
finally been solved. My system was infected with Malware/spyware and hotmail returned to normal after the malware was removed. I also had a problem with IE7 and the Microsoft IE Forum directed me to an anti spyware forum where I posted a Hijack This log. An expert advised me to use a programme SDFix and other programmes and follow some other clean up procedures. Once my system was clean Hotmail and IE7 returned to normal. Dear Robert,
I have the same problem with OE. I already produced a log with HJT. Wonder if you can give some guidance on what to delete so my Hotmail can work again with my OE.
