Default Outlook express error 10061

Hello: After downloading a fairly recent Norton Internet Security update I
now get a socket error number 10061 whenever I start up my email. I have to
change ports to 465 and 995 to get around the error. Doing this renders me
unprotected however. I can find knowwhere in Norton where my port is
getting blocked. Has anyone found a way around this? Most appreciated...

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

paste
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

I have been having a similar issue. After logging off XP under my username
and later returning to Outlook Express I am getting: The connection to the
server has failed. Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

This started about a week ago after an update. Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same problem. It seems to be a problem with NIS2006.
However I found that you can download Norton Internet Security 2007 for free
with a valid 2006 subscription- I've installed that and (so far) it seems to
have cured the problem. See

Hope this helps....
