Can't Open Newsgroup Messages in OE6 XP SP2

I have seen what may be similar issues in the past, however, haven't seen a
resolution that works for me.
I have Windows XP, SP2 with Internet Explorer 7, running Outlook Express 6,
and have created a newsgroup account, and subscribed to several Newsgroups.
An example is: microsoft.public.pocketpc.ebooks
The newsgroup does show up in the list, however, when attempting to open the
newsgroup to see actual messages, the screen just flashes and immediately
goes right back to the list of newsgroups. I can never get into the actual
newsgroup to read or reply to messages.

On this same computer, if I "uninstall" Windows SP2, ALL Newsgroups function
perfectly normal. It is only on SP2 that it fails to work. I have
replicated this problem on several different computers.

Can anyone please advise on possible things that can correct this problem.
On my work computer, it also works, until I install SP2. The problem is that
I need to have SP2 installed to comply with the corporate computer image.

Thank you,

Hi C_T,

It is probably significant that you are able to replicate this problem on
different computers while others have not experienced this issue. I don't
have an answer, but more information may be helpful.

Is any message anti-virus or spam scan in use?
What news server?

Can you open this newsgroup using a (NNTP) link?
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...tlooke xpress
This can be used in the Start, Run box or IE address box.

You mention using one machine at work, but does the other one also belong to
the same "Domain" at work?

SP2 is more secure than XP SP1 and therefore your IT department have more
options to disable things - Newsgroups can be used for binary downloads and
if I were concerned about security in our domain it is something I'd prefer
to disable for all machines, including (say) the laptops people take home
with them.

I am not the regular admin so I am not sure what can and cannot be achieved
using group policy on a domain, but probably quite a lot in the way of
security and some even by accident due to unintended side effects.

My guess is that it may be a security measure (Since they already asked you
to keep SP2 intact) so one key factor is the domain the machines belong to
and whether you are using some kind of corporate network or VPN.

Another way to achieve this sort of limitation is to use the IE Admin Kit
which can restrict IE (and therefore OE) - which means if the second machine
is company issue then your IT people are the people to talk to. I appreciate
that your intentions may be good but you should see some of the things
people download / install by accident :)

I've not seen this before either so like KT suggests it sounds like there's
more going on here than we see on the surface. This is not SP2 by itself I
think.

Are your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs turned off during install of
SP2?
What anti-virus?
What firewall are you using?
