Messages Received in MIME Format
 

Lately, I've begun receiving email messages from some individuals in MIME
format. I've requested that they send me email messages in plain text, but
that hasn't fixed the problem. Any thoughts on how to fix the problem?

Messages Received in MIME Format
 

MIME and plain text are not opposites. A MIME message may be in plain
text or HTML format. A Plain text message may be in MIME format or
Uuencode (non-MIME) Format.

Outlook Express supports all of them.

If in the normal message reading window you see the note that the
message is in MIME format and that your mail program doesn't support
MIME, that means that the MIME message headers are corrupted. (It's OK
to see that if looking at the Message Source).

Are you perhaps using SpamKiller? That program corrupts the MIME
headers in messages from Lotus Notes users. Other anti-spam programs or
anti-virus programs scanning e-mail could potentially do the same thing.

Another cause of this is messages forwarded from a mailing list that
doesn't support MIME.

I'm not using SpamKiller. However, it appears the MIME messages are from
persons who have established mail lists. The last MIME formatted message
that I received, it doesn't appear that any of the header information is
corrupted (I can read it fine, but the text is corrupted). Interesting note,
is that I received several separate messages from the same individual, and
some were received just fine, but others not. I'll have a read of your
tutorial, to see if that provides any answers.

Obtained a copy of Wincode 2.7.3 and was able to decode the MIME formatted
messages. Thank you!

That means that account is probably set up incorrectly. Look in OE at
Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers. Check with your ISP for the
correct settings.

This could also be caused by your anti-virus program being set to scan
e-mail. If so, disable that function of the anti-virus program.

There is probably something wrong with the MIME headers. Otherwise
Outlook Express would have displayed it OK.

Corrupt headers doesn't mean that they as appear as gibberish. Rather
that there is a misplaced comma or semicolon, incorrect continuation,
etc. For example, SpamKiller reflows the MIME headers and doesn't
correctly handle the continuation.

If you would like, you may send me one of the problem messages and I'll
take a look at it. It's best if you zip the message so that I get an
exact copy of it. To do that, do a File, Save As to an EML file of a
problem message. Then Right click the saved EML file and select Send
To, Compressed (zipped) folder. Then e-mail me the resulting ZIP file.
Alternately, you can do a Message, Forward As Attachment of a problem
message. This is not as good as the zip file since the headers can be
modified in transit which may obscure the problem. A simple Forward is
worthless since it does not include the headers.

I'm having the same problem, some mime some not. How do I obtain Wincode
2.7.3? I have windows xp if that matters. I've done a lot of reading about
it and still don't understand! I too have outlook I'm told! "Thanks for the

Here's one of many places that you can get Wincode

It's an old program, but still runs under Windows XP. The main drawback
is that it doesn't support long file names. So if you go to decode an
attachment with a long file name it will stop and prompt you to enter a
short file name (8.3 format). And it may not help you with the message
text.
