Reinstalling OEX 6 WITHOUT LOSING CURRENT DATA and getting addresses to self complete when typing in first letters!

I would greatly appreciate the assistance on these 2 issues!

1: Reinstalling Outlook Express 6 without losing current data at all

2: Getting the email address to self complete when typing in the 1st few
letters.

With regard to number 2: I do have the option checked off in my options
,menu where it says autocomplete email address. While I have always been
able to get it to work somehow it will not do so this time.

It is possible that there may be some corruption on this version I am using
because I constantly get error messages saying "OEX 6 was not shut down
properly, click below to see message!"
I will often open the program and it locks up and. It simply says not
responding I get that a lot and it is getting increasingly difficult to do
the simplest things!
Advice and assistance is most welcome and appreciated and I thank you in
advance for your time and trouble!
Sincerely

Neil Sheppard

Start he

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.

How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express

If that doesn't take care of the shut down error and the auto-complete, you
probably have corruption. A reinstall will likely not get rid of the
problem. Post back after you have tried the above, and for general
principles:

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

And a good two click program.

Reinstalling OEX 6 WITHOUT LOSING CURRENT DATA and getting addresses to self complete when typing in first letters!

Excessive crossposting eliminated.

#1 isn't a likely resolution to #2. Your current Identity may be damaged,
especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your
accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
