Extracting messages

Hi...

I've been wanting to extract messages from OE6 so that I could archive them
and retrieve them if necessary. My store folder is getting very full.

DBXtract works fine, except the original dates of the messages are not
shown...only the date they were extracted. That date appears under both the
create and modified column. That's very unhandy if you want to track down a
message by date. You have to open a message to see the original date.

Is there any program that will show the original sent or received dates on
the extracted eml files in a file browser.?

Thanks.

One option is to create another identity(s) for the sole purpose of
archiving.

That said, your message store can be large, as long as each folder is not.
Creating subfolders and moving messages to them may be all you need. Just
keep each folder 100MB or less and you should be fine.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

And a very good freebie toll for one click backing up.

If you drag the messages back into OE, then they will have the original
dates. The dates you are seeing are the dates the extracted files were
extracted.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm an email pack-rat...got stuff going
back years. Just trying to clean out my store folder but save old messages,
just in case.
