Outlook Express across multiple computers
I know this is probably an old question. I have a network of three computers and want the users to be able to log on to any of the three computers and retrieve there mail from a POP3 mail server. Therefore I want the storage area to be on a network drive or alternatively a way to synchronise the folders between the computers. When I try to set the storage area to a network drive outlook express will not let me select it. Is there a way to keep the storage folders for outlook express synchronised between computers or alternatively use the same network drive. Thanks Allan |

Thanks Allan Outlook Express is not amenable to message storage on a network or removable drive. You can set at to leave a message on the server and delete after 5 (or whatever) days or when deleted from Deleted Items, but sent mail will only be visible on the machine from which it was sent. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Answer in newsgroup. If your ISP offers IMAP mail server access, that is the way to go. IMAP
is designed for a single mail account to be shared by multiple PCs. The IMAP mail is managed at the mail server. If your ISP doesn't provide IMAP support, an option is to run your own local mail server that accesses the ISP via POP3 and then provides IMAP support to your local PCs. For examples of such a programs, see: Mercury Mail Transport System http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm Hamster "Classic" http://www.arcorhome.de/newshamster/...amster_en.html -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Allan Wallace" wrote in message u... Thanks for the replies. I was expecting there would be no solution to this issue, but I thought I would be optimistic and post a question. "Allan Wallace" wrote in message u... Thanks Allan You can do it with a common drive Allan but it's not really safe as all goes to hell if that drive ever goes missing. You might look at the other suggestions or consider synctoy http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx to copy files. Of course you don't want anyone to be accessing files while synchronizing so that too has some risks of OE is set to check for messages every x minutes. Your own IMAP server seems the best idea. If you have an old machine give it a try, you don't need the latest and fastest for a small network server :) |
