Default Importing address book from OL2000 to OE6.0

Well, I've searched the newsgroups high and low but haven't found what I need
to do this with. I found how to go from OE to OL but not the other way
around. My address book in .pab form exists on OL2000 in my computer at
work. Now that I got one at home that is running OE6.0 I'd like to transfer
it over. So I email myself the .pab file from work and then try to import it
into OE and it asks me for a .wab file. I tried converting the .pab to a
..csv and then to a .wab to see if that would work, but I can only get a
window that asks me which of the folders in OL I want to export from. I
can't browse for the .pab file, no matter where it is located. I'm sure I
can either do this by some sleight of keyboard or it can't be done and I have
to copy my addresses over manually. Arggghhh!! Any help would be greatly
appreciated; my apologies if this has been covered before and I couldn't find
it. Thanks!

Default Importing address book from OL2000 to OE6.0

Hi Al,

Outlook would need to be installed on your home PC for what you're trying to
do to have a chance of success -- it has the necessary converters for such
an import/export process to work. Import from Outlook on the same PC.

What can be done is to export the Outlook Contacts as a File,
Comma-Separated Values (Windows) (*.csv).

The CSV file, which is supported by OE/Windows Address Book, can be used to
import the address book entries into Outlook Express.

Default Importing address book from OL2000 to OE6.0

Thanks for the reply, Kuay. I still don't understand why I would not be able
to export something off the Outlook on my work computer, send that file home,
then import it on Outlook Express once I get it there. I tried creating a
..csv from Outlook by using the Import and Export Wizard and selecting 'Export
to a file', then Comma Separated Values (Windows), then I get a 'Select
folder to export from:' window which shows me all the folders in my mailbox.
I can't select the .pab which is where all my addresses are. I also tried
importing the .pab into a new folder I created in the mailbox but the process
goes 2/3 of the way, stops and says it encountered a MAPI 0x80070057 error
and please try again later. Guess if I can't do it some workaround way I'll
have to do them manually. I will do that before I spend money on installing
Outlook when Express does all I need it to do. Thanks again for the help.

If you can't get Outlook to export to the CSV file, that's an Outlook
issue and you'll get the best help in an Outlook newsgroup. Not many of
us Outlook Express people know much about Outlook.

If you get the CSV file, you can open it in Notepad and make sure that
is has the expected data. As for the expected formatting, you can
export from the WAB to CSV and see what OE creates.

Use the following newsgroups for questions or problems with
Outlook97/98/2000+

Default Importing address book from OL2000 to OE6.0

Hi Al,

I suspect you are not exporting from the correct Contacts folder where the
addresses are. When you get to the point in the export process of picking a
folder can you see all the Contacts folders to choose from (there may be
one, two or several)? This should be a Contacts folder, not a Mailbox
folder. As was suggested by Michael, an Outlook newsgroup would be the
place to get the best instructions for exporting the addresses. Once that's
accomplished feel free to return for OE help if needed.

Individual (Outlook) entries can be saved as vCard files (supported by OE),
but this would be an arduous process.

Ok, I will make a note of my steps at work and then query the Outlook folks.
As I recall I have no contacts in my Contacts folder, I've always saved to my

And yes, the way my luck is running I may come back to you for more help!!

Default Importing address book from OL2000 to OE6.0

Hi Al,

I'm sure the Outlook newsgroups will prove helpful. Since addresses cannot
be exported from a Personal Address Book file as a CSV file it would be
necessary to first import them into a Contacts folder.

work. Now that I got one at home that is running OE6.0 I'd like to
transfer
it over. So I email myself the .pab file from work and then try to import
it
into OE and it asks me for a .wab file. I tried converting the .pab to a
.csv and then to a .wab to see if that would work, but I can only get a
window that asks me which of the folders in OL I want to export from. I
can't browse for the .pab file, no matter where it is located. I'm sure I
can either do this by some sleight of keyboard or it can't be done and I
have
to copy my addresses over manually. Arggghhh!! Any help would be greatly
appreciated; my apologies if this has been covered before and I couldn't
find
it. Thanks!
