Default Outlook Express: There was an error opening this message.

Hi crew,

In Outlook Express 6, when replying to a message or when clicking
"Create Mail" I get the following error message:

"There was an error opening this message. An Error has occurred."

The "new mail" window doesn't open at this time. However, if I wait
around 5 minutes the window will eventualy open. I dont think it has
anything to do with the security updates that I have been reading about
causing this error. No one else on the network is seeming to have the
issue. I tried clearing the cache and deleted Folders.dbx and
Inbox.dbx. Nothing has fixed this issue yet. Any suggestions are
welcome.

Try compacting all OE folders (http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact) and deleting Temporary Internet Files (accepting the option to delete all offline content).

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update, installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss in the futu http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Try going to File | Identities and set up a new Identity. Then see if that
fixes it.

Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave that a try and it's still giving the
same error. I loggged onto another machine and tried doing the same
thing with the "create mail" and "reply" and it gave the same error.
Its starting to sound like something with OE is hosed in the profile. I
am going to try to recreate the OE profile. Any other suggestions are
welcome.

Hi again,

I recreated the OE profile and that didnt fix it. I also recreated the
entire user profile and that didn't fix the error. I am also getting an
error about the Address Book. Any suggestions, please advise.

GOT IT FIXED.

Turns out it was the security patch "KB911567". I deleted the patch.
rebooted and it worked fine. Reinstalled the patch with no problem,
still working fine.

Interesting. While searching for the same error message you posted
about I found your post.

I looked and saw that KB911567 was installed on my PC back in April. As
my issue just popped up the past few days I was hesitant to uninstall
and reinstall the patch.

Since it had been 4 days since my last reboot I decided to try and
reboot. Low and behold it fixed the error message I was getting and now
all is working OK.

Thats very good that it fixed it by rebooting. Leaving your computer up
and running without a reboot for that long can cause things to start
going screwy.

Speaking I am on a network of over 1500 users and this was the only
instance of the error, I was very hesistant on removing the security
patch also. But to my surprise, once I've done so it fixed the error. I
then installed the patch again and presto! It still worked.

That's not true of Windows 2000 and XP unless you have some bad software
installed. The machines at my place of employment typically get rebooted
only if required by an install, so they're sometimes up continuously for a
couple of months at a time.
