when I got to Outlook two 'window panes' show. I don't want to see the
message in the lower pane, how do I get rid of this, please.

If you're asking about Outlook, you should be asking in a newsgroup for
Outlook:
news://microsoft.public.outlook.general

Click on View, Layout and then manipulate the various boxes in that window.

View | Layout. Uncheck: Show Preview Pane.

You are in the correct place for MS Outlook Express. But your original
post mentioned "Outlook". MS Outlook is a completely different program
than MS Outlook Express; "Outlook" is _not_ shorthand for "Outlook
Express".
