Default How to move folders to another drive

I am running out of room on drive c where all the OE folders are stored. Is
there a way to move the archive folders to another drive and still be
accessed from OE6?

In the past, I have moved them to another drive, but then can't access them
unless I move them back to the drive c.

Thanks in advance.

Fred

The other drive needs to be a local hard disk. Not a network or
removable drive.

You have to be careful on the move or else you can wipe out data files.
A backup before starting is a good idea.

See:
How do I move my store folder?
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#movestore

Note: Do NOT manually move the files. OE will move them for you.

Default How to move folders to another drive

Thanks a lot, Mike! That's a great site!!!

I tried it out and it was real easy. In fact, to be sure I remember how to
restore the archived files, I copied the instructions into an email to
myself. Then, after replacing the old folder with a new one of the same
name, I dropped it into the place-holder folder for later.

Now, Question #XXX....

I looked my SENT folder and saw it was 250MB. So I created a folder, Sent -
051231, and moved all the old emails up to 12/31/05 from the SENT folder
into it. I noticed that now the remaining emails are about 10% of what was
originally there.

But (and this is a big butt) if I look at the DBX files again in explorer,
the SENT file is still 250MB. I shut down OE and explorer, then opened each
and checked again -- still shows 250MB. Seems like it should show something
smaller. (There are no large attachments, etc, in those emails.)

Thanks again.

I'm just jumping in here so I may not have all your answers.

If you delete, or move messages from folders, the size of the dbx files will
not change until you compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Deleting or moving messages still leaves the space that was created by them
until you compact.

That said, *do not compact* until you have moved your messages to their new
location successfully.

You seem to be in good shape, but there are so many reasons that can cause
messages to disappear, I can not stress enough how important it is to backup
OE on a regular basis. Should you lose messages for any reason, you have a
simple means to restore them without having to purchase a program that may,
or may not get them back.
