Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it may be causing the problem, and even Symantec
says
it's not necessary:

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Are the hotmail accounts due to get disconnected? I can not access
a hotmail account today, where yesterday I could.

The approrpiate information presented in the OE POP3 log:

Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.070514-1324)
POP3 Log started at 07/20/2009 08:18:49

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a
long period of inactivity. Account: 'jcarlock', Server:
'pop3.live.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I tried a couple of the other settings to see if they changed
something along those lines, and the hotmail access via OE HTTP
works for another account.

So either the hotmail POP3 servers went down (on purpose or some
kind of accident) or I missed out on a Microsoft communique?

It looks like Microsoft does not keep as many records on their
NNTP servers, too.

Thank you for any comments.
