ADDENDUM: With further experimentation, I have to conclude that the SOLE source of the problem with this sparker is the striker. When using the striker from the Swedish FireSteel, there is NO problem in getting full and powerful sparks. A piece of 1/16" mild steel with a couple of half round scallops filed on the edge, and left rough, provide an excellent and durable striker for this unit. First note. The Compact will do the job, but it takes some time and effort to make it work properly. The 'sparker' shaft on both the compact and the firesteel is the same diameter, and from all visual inspection, it's the same material. The compact has glue oozing out of the handle, the Swedish firesteel(s) were clean. The real problem is in the striker, the length of hacksaw blade is limber, but that's easy to overcome simply by shortening your grip on the striker blade. The saw teeth go down to the steel. However, there is a coating on the steel when new AND there is a layer of paint on the striker. the paint on the striker along with it's flexibility make it much harder to strike a large spark. I went so far as to ring a couple of scallops into the striker as with the Firesteel design. These helped, but the Compact was still significantly more difficult to get a good, hot spark. Given the relative costs of the two, I'd definitely go with the Swedish (Light My Fire) unit.
It's a good product, but you're going to end up paying more in shipping than on the actual item. You're better off to go to a local outfitter and get one there.
