Default how to download without opening spreadsheets

When I download files that are in spreadsheet format,
they open with Excell. I just want the download to proceed without
opening the file. It used to work that way when I was using Win 95 but
since I upgraded to XP it won't just do a simple download without opening
the file. How do I fix this?

Ed
