I'd like to remove some attendees and add others to a recurring meeting - easy to do however I'd like the removed attendees to keep the previous meetings in their calendar and the new attendees to only have the meetings from this date forward.

is this possible ?

Not with the event on your calendar now. You'll have to have multiple events
for that. Recurring events are single items, not a list of items. You can
alter the original event to give it an ending date and then create a new event
starting now, with the appropriate invitees.
