I work an eight day schedule, 5 days on, 3 days off.
To enable me to easily schedule my holidays, is there any way to repeat an
appointment on an eight day cycle. Or do I have to fill the calender in for
the complete 365 days, individually.

Yes, you can have a eight day recurrence pattern. Just use the 'daily'
recurrence setting and set the 'every' to eight days

You'll need 5 appointment, each one repeating every 8 days.
