Default IMPORTED contact_list.XLS to Outlook 2002, but no birthdays show?

Had laptop stolen, so i am not working from a PST, but instead am importing
an XLS spreadsheet that I had as a backup. I can import the contacts fine
(yet, I was very disappinted to konw that Excel truncated the Notes Field!),
however, I cannot get all the birthday within those contact (there's probably
2,000 of them) to automatically propogate to the Calendar. The only work
around I have discovered is forcing me to enter EACH contact, re-select that
contacts birthday (even though it shows the correct date), and then hit Save.
Is there some way to automate this sequence, or better yet, is there a way
to force the Calendar to recognize the birthdays, and associate them with an
entry in the Calendar section?

thanks, Angelo
