Default Excel import won't recognize zip code fields, others are fine

Karl - thank you for your help. My problem was that the zip code fields did
not show up at all. I tried creating a csv file from the data and that
import worked.

Would be helpful if you defined what you mean by "are not recognized". Do
you mean that these fields are not being imported at all or appear to be
imported "incorrectly" (i.e. importing with a decimal extension etc)?

To minimize back 'n forth msg's - if the problem you're having is the latter
(which is generally the most common issue) - then the cause is that the Zip
Code is being treated as a "numeric" field (especially if you have the
format of 99999-9999). Change the column to text format. If that fails, save
the worksheet as a CSV file and import that file instead.
