Default Why are attachments coming through as .dat?

ask the sender to use plain text format to eliminate RTF as the cause.

My client sends me Word documents but they have been coming through lately
with a .dat extension that doesn't seem to allow me to open them. It's
encoded or something and looks like a bunch of symbols instead of text.

Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Thank you!
