I shut down the system anyway even though I couldn't turn off those two
features. I forgot to say that I was having trouble shutting down XP as well
& would frequently get an End Programm CCApp message. But when I booted back
up, OE was working, so whatever it was (can you identify this for me -
something to do with a Norton Firewall update???), it appears to be over.

Try the section entitled "To restore the default General and Trojan horse
firewall rules" at this page:

If no joy, Disable protection, reboot, and re-enable it.

yes, but I shut it completely off to make sure that this wasn't what was
interfering with OE and there was no change whatsoever in the OE function.

Are you running Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall?

I just downloaded the latest Windows XP Updates and have SP2 on this
system. However, when I rebooted, I can no longer send or receive
msgs in OE6. I can open the program OK & can also surf the Internet
with IE. I don't receive any error messages but sometimes have
trouble shutting OE down. I also tried turning off my anti-virus
program, but this didn't help. Could there be a problem with a
Windows Update that is causing this to happen?
