I'm not certain, but after trying a couple of things from your list, and
then closing IE and OE, the next load saw the problem gone!

I'm using Windows XP SP2, and recently the embedded pictures in
Outlook Express 6 are failing to display. I get the boundary of the
picture and an internal square with a red cross in it. I'm assuming
something that I've done recently has stopped this working. Any
suggestions welcome.
